Bird Friendly

Bird FriendlyBird-Friendly coffees are certified as shade-grown and organic by independent third-party inspectors using criteria established by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center of the National Zoo. Twenty five cents per pound of Bird-Friendly coffee is used to support Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center research and conservation programs. The Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center has used the following criteria in selecting coffee to be labeled “Bird Friendly”: Maintain a recommend minimum of 10 species of shade trees with no more than 70 percent Inga; maintain minimum shade cover of 40 percent at noon and minimum height of 10 meters for backbone trees; keep some shorter and taller plants mixed in; limit pruning of shade trees and removal of epiphytes whenever possible; maintain adequate road and stream buffers. The mission of the Smithonian Migratory Bird Centers Bird-Friendly coffee certifications, is to conduct research and education around issues of neo-tropical migratory bird populations, promoting certified shade coffee as a viable supplemental habitat for birds and other organisms.

Coffee Fest

Coffee FestThe coffee industries largest trade show. Coffee Fest has been held annually in Seattle since 1992 and is also held in Las Vegas, Chicago, and Atlanta.

Coffee Kids

Coffee KidsAn organization with a mission to improve the quality of life for children and families who live in coffee-growing communities around the world. Coffee Kids was founded in 1988 by Bill Fishbein, the owner of Coffee Exchange, a specialty coffee roaster and retailer in Providence, RI. That year, Bill had traveled to Guatemala and saw first-hand the connection between coffee farming and poverty. He created Coffee Kids as a way for coffee businesses and coffee consumers to give something back to the families who grow coffee. Coffee Kids is funded by donations, made mostly by coffee companies wanting to support a good cause.

Fair Trade

Fair TradeA certification for coffee producers, intended to help ensure equitable trading arrangements for disadvantaged small holders who are organized into cooperatives. Fair Trade certification is also used to promote sustainable agricultural and farm management practices without the use of agrochemicals or genetically modified organisms.

Grounds for Health

Grounds for HealthGrounds for Health (GFH) is an international non-profit organization founded to provide health care services to coffee-growing communities in Mexico and Central America. The goal of GFH is to create sustainable and effective cancer prevention programs with a primary focus on the early detection and treatment of cervical cancer, a leading cause of death among women who lack access to healthcare.

ICO

ICOThe International Coffee Organization (ICO) is the main intergovernmental organization for coffee, bringing together producing and consuming countries to tackle the challenges facing the world coffee sector through international cooperation. ICO makes a practical contribution to the world coffee economy and to improving standards of living in developing countries.

Organic

OrganicUSDA's National Organic Program regulates the standards for any farm that wants to sell an agricultural product as organically produced. Organic production methods replenish and maintain soil fertility, and reduce or eliminate the use pesticides and fertilizers. To be considered organic, a third-party certification organization must verify that the farmer followed organic production methods in accordance with the United Stated Organic Foods Production Act of 1990. The National Organic Program is a subject of some controversy. One issue seems to be that there is no clear definition for "organic". Also, for poor coffee farmers, the cost and uncertainty involved with the verification process makes certification difficult, even for some already using sustainable and organic farming systems.

SCAA

SCAASpecialty Coffee Association of America. The SCAA is a trade association for the specialty coffee industry, one of the fastest-growing food industries in the world. Specialty coffee — sometimes called "gourmet" or "premium" coffee — is grown in the world's most ideal coffee-producing climates and prepared according to exacting standards. One of the SCAA's primary functions is to set the industry's standards for growing, roasting and brewing. Members of the SCAA include coffee retailers, roasters, producers, exporters and importers, as well as manufacturers of coffee equipment and related products.

Utz Certified

Utz CertifiedThe UTZ CERTIFIED program is based on the UTZ CERTIFIED Code of Conduct: a set of social and environmental criteria for responsible coffee growing practices and efficient farm management. Utz is a Mayan word for "good". Coffee producers must comply with this code to become UTZ CERTIFIED.
